About Sweet Valley High

Sweet Valley High is a young adult book series created by Francine Pascal and written by several ghostwriters, revolving around the lives of Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield, beautiful blonde twins who live in fictitious Sweet Valley, California. The series began with the book Double Love, which was published in 1984. The Sweet Valley High series contained over 150 books and spawned several spin-off series.

Structure of the Books
Originally, the books centered solely on the lives of the Wakefield twins. As the series progressed, several books were dedicated to other characters within the Sweet Valley universe, although every book contained at least a subplot pertaining to Jessica or Elizabeth. After the Magna Edition, A Night to Remember, which was the 100th book in the regular series, Sweet Valley High was reformatted to contain a succession of story arcs which usually took place over three books, eg: the Cheerleading Miniseries, which saw the Sweet Valley cheerleading squad compete in a national competition, contained Jessica Quits the Squad, The Pom Pom Wars and V For Victory. In addition to the regular books, the series also contained several Mystery and Super editions. Most of these stories contained outside the Sweet Valley High mainframe, with the events contained within bearing little significance to the main books.

Main Characters
Elizabeth Wakefield is the elder twin, having been born four minutes before her "little sister" Jessica. Elizabeth enjoys reading and writing, and hopes to become a journalist someday. She writes the weekly gossip column, "Eyes and Ears," (and later "Personal Profiles") for the Sweet Valley High newspaper, "The Oracle." Jessica Wakefield, on the other hand, is superficial, self-absorbed and flirty. Her interests change from minute to minute and she loves being up to date on the latest fashions and music. She often gets herself into sticky situations, relying on Elizabeth to bail her out.
